Preserving the past for the future on Pine Island, Florida
The title of this picture is “Road making machine – at work on roads of St. James on Gulf, Florida”. It is from 1880s and shows the operators preparing the road surface to later be paved with shells. Unfortunately, those shells would come from the Calusa Indian mounds scattered around St. James City.
