The “Alice Howard”

The St. James-on-the-Gulf Company’s boat, the Alice Howard, was the first to bring mail to St. James City.  The ship sailed here three times per week from the town of Liverpool, on the Peace River.  As the ship approached the wharf it would summon people from the other areas with three long blast from the ship’s whistle.  Settlers from the surrounding islands would row or sail over to St. James City to pick up their mail and packages.
