Preserving the past for the future on Pine Island, Florida

The Koreshans Briefly Own the San Carlos Hotel

On December 6, 1893 Cyrus Teed, the leader of the Koreshans, boarded the train from Chicago to Punta Gorda, accompanied by Annie Ordway and Berthaldine Sterling Boomer.  They met a Mr. Whitehead who showed them the abandoned hotel property at St. James City. They deemed the cost of $150,000.00 was too much for the property.

The Koreshans subsequently bought the San Carlos Hotel 1895 as a possible site for their World College of Life. They also bought the hotel Annex building and the large wharf.  However, the hotel burned down on July 26, 1905 while it was being remodeled.  Credit Koreshan Web Site
